artist statement.
I'm an abstract artist, and my artworks are primarily created on heavy, handmade cotton rag papers, on which I create a foundational painting or keep completely plain. I then carve into the surface to create sculptural, textured works using a precise set of techniques I have developed over the last 3 years.
At the heart of my artistic practice is the need to escape from life’s restrictions and distractions, allowing myself freedom and a sense of grounding and connectedness. I spend many hours each week exploring UK woodlands, and also travel on worldwide adventures, exploring the beauty in other cultures and landscapes. This frees my mind and feeds my creative practice.
Spending time reflecting in nature is central to my expression. I'm in complete awe of nature's ability to grow and connect, and of the unexplainable energy you feel at certain moments. This manifests in works that draw on how I feel in the moment, and translate into pieces that convey various emotions of intrigue, calmness and joy.
This time to decompress is important to our mental health, especially as we so often get swept up in our fast and furious lifestyles and habits. The practice of painting and creating sculptural carvings is a meditation. I hope viewers take their own moment for meditation, gazing at my art as a reminder of why it's important to slow down and reconnect.
biography.
Mimi Zouch (b.1984) is a contemporary abstract artist based in North-West London.
In 2020 following a successful career in law, Zouch made the leap to pursue a career as an artist, and the following years served to accelerate her self-taught practice through experimentation with the use of acrylics and pigments on various surfaces. Further exploration of different media and process led her to develop her own individual method of paper manipulation by way of carving the paper's surface to create textured paper sculptures.
Represented by Catharine Miller Gallery in Chelsea - London, Art Friend - London, and Claudia Kennaugh in Bristol. Zouch has been in multiple group shows across the UK, in addition to a London solo show and duo show at Sarah Kravitz gallery in Soho. Her work has been exhibited at The Royal Society of Arts, The Shard New Building, The Other Art Fair, The Affordable Art Fair, The Decorative Fair, Shoreditch Modern Gallery, and House of Estila for Clerkenwell Design Week 2025. Zouch has completed private and corporate commissions across the globe as far afield as Hong Kong, and has been featured in notable interior design magazines AD Italia, and AD Middle East.
Her fascination with the natural world and unexplained energies remains a steadfast inspiration. Delivering a purposeful sense of emotion through her art, Zouch's paintings and her unique, intricate textural works are born from a need to escape life's restrictions and to have freedom and connection - mentally, physically, with nature and others.
